Want to gain valuable experience and help others reduce their C02 emissions at home…?

…then help volunteer with the Big Green Makeover!

We are a group of dedicated volunteers helping staff and students across the Uni to reduce their carbon emissions at home by 10% in 2010. How? We visit and work with flats to help make their homes more sustainable and cheaper to live in.

Training

You will receive full training in partnership with Energy Saving Scotland advice centre to prepare you for working with flats. To get the most out of the experience, it is important that you are able to attend all 3 sessions. These will happen on:

***Training Programme RESCHEDULED – please note training starts a week later than previously advertised

  1. Thu 25th Feb, 6.30-9pm, G.02 William Robertson Building, George Square
The first session will provide an overview of the project, including its rationale and the action research process. It will then cover establishing a baseline with flats who participate in the project.
  2. Thu 4th Mar, 6.30-9pm, G.02 WRB, George Square
The second session will explore how project volunteers can communicate behaviour change. It will also cover more practical considerations, such as health & safety and personal security while doing home visits.
  3. Thu 11th Mar, 6.30-9pm, David Hume Tower Conference Room, George Square
The third session deals with the technical aspects of the makeovers with the local Energy Saving Scotland advice centre, including electricity, water, heating and waste. This will be followed be a role play for everyone to try putting what they’ve learned into practice!

Helping the flats

Following the training, you will work in pairs with one or more flats and visit them three times (about two weeks apart) to:

  1. Identify areas they’d like help with (beginning of March)
  2. Give their flat a Big Green Makeover to help them save energy and money! (middle of March)
  3. Reflect and evaluate on their experience and consider next steps (end of March)

Learn new skills / knowledge

What will YOU gain from taking part in the Big Green Makeover? By inspiring and supporting others you will gain communication, team-work and time management skills, as well as an understanding of energy efficiency and practical sustainability more generally.
