To Celebrate World Environment Day and to encourage positive and creative action Cineco, the University of Edinburgh’s Green Film Festival, will be hosting a day of short films and fun for free on June 5th at the Royal Botanic Garden’s John Hope Gateway Centre.
Short films will be shown downstairs from 9am-12.30pm and 4.30-6pm.
Sitar Rose’s ‘Blue Poppy’ will be shown upstairs at 12.30pm and 2.30pm. ‘Blue Poppy’ is a story told by young traditional Tibetan doctors, who travelled in 2007 from their nomadic homeland in eastern Tibet to the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh to learn how to save their wild medicinal plants from dying out.Three years on, their horticultural studies continue.
On 14th April 2010, the Yushu (Jiegu) Orphans School where they were educated and their home town in eastern Tibet was devastated by an earthquake in which over 2,000 people died and more than 12,000 people were injured. 90% of homes were destroyed all the hospitals collapsed.
This screening hopes to raise funds to help provide homes and education for the orphans of Yushu and do whatever possible to help people in the area rebuild their lives after this catasrophe.
