written by Joseph Farthing on May 18, 2010One of the most interesting things about our recent volcano trouble is what it did to the sky. It’s not so noticeable in Edinburgh, but where I grew up in the South East of England aeroplane vapour trails are a regular sight. The familiar sound of take-off and landing becomes a regular part of your background. During the first big flight ban my southern friends kept telling me: “It’s weird now the planes are gone.” The skies felt empty.
Now a fascinating video has emerged that shows you exactly what happened after the ban was lifted. Read more to watch.

The number of flights we take is staggering, and my personal sense of wonderment at the sheer scale of it all is only tempered by that worrying little CO2 graph.
But I’m optimistic – millions of people just encountered our dependence on cheap air travel hands on, and lots of them found new ways of travelling home. Even Jeremy Clarkson.
