Lighter Later is an innovative carbon-cutting campaign initiated by 10:10 that could soon be turned into law.

10:10 has launched Lighter Later. This is quite an ingenious campaign aiming to cut down carbon emissions, boost the economy and productivity as well as prevent accidents. How? The plan is to change the clocks so that the waking hours are closely more aligned with daylight.

It sounds complicated, but it’s actually rather simple. Lighter Later is about shifting UK’s clocks forward by one hour throughout the year. In other words, instead of setting the clocks to GMT in winter and GMT+1 in summer, these should be set to GMT+1 in winter and GMT+2 in summer. The regular time change in spring and autumn would still be kept: putting clocks forward in spring and back in autumn, only that the sun would rise and set one hour later throughout the year. Thus more people would be up and around more during daylight.

The benefits of this initiative are multiple: carbon cutting, saving lives by reducing crime and fear of crime, lower electricity bills, quality life improvement just to name a few.

More importantly, this initiative might even be passed into law. If you like the initiative sign up on the Lighter Later web site and find out more about it.
