10 big name UK summer  festivals join the 10:10 campaign and pledge to cut 10% of their carbon dioxide emissions during 2010.

There are over 500 open air festivals in the UK some of which are the most famous in Europe. Anyone who has ever experienced at least one of these festivals over the past years can vouch for the amount of fun such an event creates.

What about what’s left behind?

According to recent research conducted by Oxford University the combined emissions from 500 festivals in the UK was 84,000 tonnes of CO2 in one year. The numbers generated an incredible response form 10 major festivals that joined the Festivals Programme initiative of 10:10 and Julie’s Bicycle.

So far the list includes: Isle of Wight, Latitiude, Lovebox, Big Tent, The Big Chill, Lounge on the Farm, Reading, Leeds, T in the Park, Bestival, Hay Literary Festival. The organizers have agreed to make sure they reduce energy, water and waste emissions by 10%.

And it’s not just talk! Isle of Wight will have in place a solar-powered stage. At Latitude, Reading and Leeds people will be eating using recycled or compostable cups and cutlery. And Bestival will have composting toilets.

Detailed information on the campaign can be found In The Guardian’s UK music festivals join 10:10 campaign to cut emissions article.
