Right now, pollution is changing our climate
We know it’s true. In recent years there has been sustained climate change, which we can see from global temperature rises. Scientists are in clear agreement that most of these changes are caused by humans.
Cheap oil is running out
Oil won’t last forever. We’ve all seen petrol and gas prices rise in the last few years. Oil is getting rarer and trickier to extract – eventually it will run out, but first it’s going to get more and more expensive.
Learn about the issues that matter to us
Let’s make our University fit for the future
We are a community project of students and staff working to create a low-carbon University. With fossil fuels causing climate change and their long-term supplies uncertain, we want to create an alternative vision of the future. We work together practically and imaginatively to find new ways for our community to sustain and thrive.
Our four working aims are to:
- Find out how the University community works.
- Make sure everybody knows about us and gets involved.
- Set up practical programmes to cut our carbon pollution.
- Spread our work beyond the University.
What we do
Our biggest areas of work are currently:
- A volunteer led ‘Big Green Makeover‘ scheme surveying your house to find ways of reducing environmental impact.
- Fun and educational events around campus, including interactive Handprint Socials and speaker events.
- Developing courses to explore how you can cut your CO2, including ‘Carbon Conversations’ and ‘Climate Solidarity’.
- ‘Big Switch’, finding ways to cut energy usage at Pollock Halls, including an inter-halls energy competition.
- Working with local Universities communities to replicate our work.
Who we reach
We believe that if we are to change our University for the better, staff and students must work together as a community.
Transition Edinburgh University works openly, which means that anyone can get involved, and horizontally, which means that everyone has a part to play, and everyone’s opinion is valued.
