The role of the University

written by Olga Bloemen on March 4, 2011

More than a week ago, I got back from a conference weekend in the lovely little town of Winchester, mouth fully named: “For People and Planet: Not Profit and Self-Destruction. Can Universities make the move towards, or even lead ‘transition’?. The speakers, panel debates and small group discussions evolved around the following question: what role can, and should, UK universities play in times of climate change, approaching peak oil and, more generally, a broken social and economic system?

Job Adverts Withdrawn

written by Joseph Farthing on March 3, 2011

Sunset from our office
The view from our office window.

Hello everyone,

We previously advertised jobs on this website, and on other locations and websites. Those jobs were dependant on a funding application we submitted last month. Unfortunately we learnt this week that the funding application was unsuccessful and, as such, the jobs we advertised are no longer available.

Thank you very much for your interest,

Joe Farthing

Join us from 7.30 Teviot’s Library Bar (downstairs Writing Room).

This month’s Green Drinks coincides with the Transition Community Gathering (aka steering group) which is happening from 6pm to 7.30pm in the Balcony Room in Teviot, the perfect place to catch up with TEU projects, the funding bid and have your say. It’s also EUSA election night in Teviot so we can have a few drinks then head upstairs for the exciting results!

See you there :-)

Fresh Air Student Radio, Transition Edinburgh University and DIY Edinburgh with the bicycle powered generators, are proud to present….

smoothiebike3

A bicycle powered, remotely broadcast, radio show!

Jamie Wood and the Music Team will be streaming their Breath of Fresh Air music radio show this Friday 25th Feb between 2 – 3.30pm as normal…only this time it will be live powered by cyclists! No cyclists, no energy to power the equipment, no radio show. So come join in make it happen with us! A pretty unique event come to think of it…can’t really think where this has been done before?! (if you know, let us know!) Or, tune in online and turn it up!

There may be quizzes, games, silly hats for those cycling, live bands and definitely some pumping tunes…General audience participation, discussion on an environmental/social theme, finding out how the generators work, interesting projects happening at Uni and around and perhaps some nonsense…..most probably some nonsense : )

Short notice but hey, we like to surprise…

See you there! (no lycra required)

How far we’ve come in more than 30 years

written by Joseph Farthing on February 17, 2011

Here’s a fun graph – price of oil compared to the percentage of energy generated from renewable sources. The good news is that the UK has more than doubled it’s renewable energy capacity since 1975. The bad news is that oil has got 10x more expensive in that time!
