Introduction to Growing Your Own Veg with the Allotment and Permaculture Society

9th  March | Kings Building Allotment | 12-2pm
Spring is coming and veg needs to be grown. Not sure where to start? Handily the Allotment Society will be running a workshop in seed propagating and the basics of growing your own veg! Seeds and compost and many a skilled gardener’s mind to pick are all included, just bring some tubs if you want to take some plants back to grow on your windowsill. All free and all welcome!

On Saturday the 12th of February we’ll be heading over to Whitmuir Farm.

Come visit the home of the Veg Bag vegetables! We’ll be touring the farm and lending a hand replanting their willow hedge.

Merry Moods and Festive foods – Oh what a feast it was…

A million foot of snow didn’t stop us, the feast on December 1st did go on!

After carting around lovely organic winter veg from Whitmuir to various cooking stations around the city, we had a full day of scrubbing, chopping and baking to cook a meal for 120. Easy peasy (cough) for a fantastic group of volunteers from the Fairtrade café, People and Planet, Abundance and Transition, one bike trailer and a car.

Chutney-making and winter food preservation workshop

The final food skills workshop of the season!

Monday 29th November: 2-5pm

@the Grassmarket Community Centre, 86 Candlemaker Row

In a bit of a pickle? Well…

This final workshop of the season deals with Chutney and other winter food preservation techniques. We’ll be transforming lots of lovely Autumn produce into delicious chutney over the space of an afternoon, and whilst its bubbling away we’ll learn more about simple preservation techniques such as salting, pickling, drying and fermentation. We’ll also be making some apple rings to dry.

Need something tasty for dinner? Some organic, cheap, incredibly fresh veg? Want to buy some local produce but don’t know where to go?


Never fear! The TEU VegBag is here! Filled with lovely fresh produce from Damhead farms, our VegBags are an easy way to get your five a day without having to head to Tesco. Plus they’re cheap, convenient and delicious. There’ll be a hearty selection of local Scottish veg, and we’ll be selling the bags for £4. Come along on your way home and have a look…

While this is only a pilot program, if we get a good enough response, we’ll try to make it a regular thing. So come one, come all and buy some lovely cheap veg from on Tuesday Nov 9th from 3-6pm outside the Main Library

All vegetables supplied by Damhead Organic Farm (www.damhead.co.uk) which also give a 25% discount to Edinburgh University students on all their fruit and veg.

Beer of the British Isles

Bristo Hall was packed last Friday for a celebration of independent breweries and low carbon travel!

Over 8o people showed up and enjoyed sample beer from four corners of the British Isles to the sounds of lovely fiddle music. There was a bit of beer history involved – a speaker from the Campaign for Real Ale spoke about the links between local ale and the distinctiveness of different parts of the UK.
