A message to Edinburgh University from Kenya

Justin Kenrick is is involved in Portobello Transition Town and a lecturer in Social Anthropology at the University of Glasgow. He sent us this message to explain why he couldn’t join us at our Grassroots Climate Exchange.

Beer of the British Isles

Bristo Hall was packed last Friday for a celebration of independent breweries and low carbon travel!
Over 8o people showed up and enjoyed sample beer from four corners of the British Isles to the sounds of lovely fiddle music. There was a bit of beer history involved – a speaker from the Campaign for Real Ale spoke about the links between local ale and the distinctiveness of different parts of the UK.

Clear skies for a little while

One of the most interesting things about our recent volcano trouble is what it did to the sky. It’s not so noticeable in Edinburgh, but where I grew up in the South East of England aeroplane vapour trails are a regular sight. The familiar sound of take-off and landing becomes a regular part of your background. During the first big flight ban my southern friends kept telling me: “It’s weird now the planes are gone.” The skies felt empty.
