UPDATE - We’ve updated this page to answer some of the questions everyone’s been asking.

Transition Edinburgh University seeks to recruit current students or recent graduates of the University as Paid Interns to work for varying lengths of time up to March 2011. Time arrangements can be flexible, and positions can take place during term time and/or in the summer.

Based at 5 Forrest Hill alongside 6 project staff, all positions are part-time, approx 12 hours/week at £8.17/hr plus expenses.

An exciting project for cutting personal carbon emissions and building resilience in the University community.

Transition Handprint Social: Keeping Our Homes Warm in a Low CO2 World

Right now, pollution is changing our climate and cheap oil is running out. How can we warm our buildings without warming the climate?  Thought provoking Pecha Kucha presentations followed by drinks and sandwiches.

Wednesday 17th March, 5.45-7.30pm (later than previously billed). McEwan Hall Reception Room (Entrance in Medical College Quad).

Presentations to include:

  • Edinburgh’s Big Green Makeover – Volunteer run project reducing energy usage in student flats.  Transition Edinburgh University.
  • Big Switch @ Pollock – Inter-house energy competition run in University residences with Accommodation Services.  Transition Edinburgh University.
  • Energy Performance Certificates – What EPC legislation means for Edinburgh residents.  Transition Edinburgh University.
  • Combined Heat and Power at Edinburgh University – George Square, Pollock Halls, and Kings Buildings are powered by Edinburgh University’s own power plants.  David Somervell, Sustainability Advisor.
  • And more to be announced.

There’ll also be a chance to find out about related events and activities.

How Can We Create Low CO2 Universities?

1-5pm, Friday 26th March
University of Edinburgh, 60 Pleasance, Edinburgh EH8 9TJ (map)
Sandwich tea will be provided afterwards.  Full travel bursaries available within Scotland.

Right now, pollution is changing our climate and cheap oil is running out.  How can students and staff work together to make our Universities fit for the future?

Workshops and discussion about practical projects to create low-CO2 Universities.

  • Hear from people running empowering projects rethinking our energy, travel, food, and services.
  • Influence your University’s carbon management plan, with Andrew Taylor from People & Planet UK.
  • Where does CO2 come from in a University population? With Ric Lander from Transition Edinburgh University.
  • Volunteer home energy audits, with Ruth Bush from NUS Scotland’s Student Footprints Project.
  • How to get funding for your projects, on and off-campus.
  • Building on exciting schemes and networks to support and spread action.

University of Edinburgh Students and Staff Unveil Ambitious New Environmental Plan

Students and staff at the University of Edinburgh have pledged to cut their carbon emissions by 10% this year.

“10:10 Week” – a series of events centred around the 10:10 campaign – closed with the unveiling of a three metre wide 10:10 sign made out of recycled aluminium from a scrapped Boeing 747 named “The City of Edinburgh”.
