  • Pollution is changing our climate, and cheap oil is running out.

  • Travel makes up a quarter of all UK carbon dioxide pollution.

  • The effects of climate change are already being felt by the world's poorest.

  • Flying is the most polluting way to get from A to B.

I pledge to...

Please tick at least one

  • Seek alternatives to international flights, and never fly within the UK.
  • Why does this matter?

Taking just a couple of flights each year adds a large amount of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere and burns a lot of oil in the process.

One long flight will release the same carbon as many months of home energy use or thousands of miles in a car. There are real alternatives over land and sea, especially if you’re travelling within Europe. In the UK, there are plenty of affordable and hassle-free options.

Simply avoiding any short flights in this country would be a great start for anyone determined to cut their 10% in 2010.

  • Why does this matter?

There are some great resources around to help you find the way to travel that suits you and your budget, destination and time frame.

From biking and carsharing to travelling by train, ferry or coach, a low-impact travel choice is first and foremost an experience. These are ways of making the journey more fun, and at least as enjoyable as the destination.

Information about all these travel tools are included in your Infrequent Flyers’ Pocket Companion

  • Enjoy the journey as well as the destination.
  • Why does this matter?

Traveling doesn’t have to be stressful. What’s more fun, a packed and overcrowded airport check-in, or a journey that’s as much a part of your holiday as the holiday itself?

Traveling by train, bus, or ferry, or in a shared car allows you to enjoy the scenery, meet new friends and get a sense of passing places as you roll on by.

The journey is just as important as the destination. Making the best of it doesn’t have to mean getting there faster.

  • Rediscover the exciting outings and activities on my doorstep.
  • Why does this matter?

Going on holiday has become synonymous with abroad up to the point where we have started to take for granted the places that are close to us. Let's rediscover the places near us.

We live in a beautiful, vibrant and diverse country. Taking the chance to explore it properly can make a great holiday without the trouble of international travel.

Getting to know and to enjoy these places not only saves money and carbon emissions, but reconnects you with unnoticed places.

  • Why does this matter?

Make your voice heard and be followed.

Share your low impact travel experiences and ideas with friends and peers and let them know how they can become an active part in a new fairer travelling community.

Make this pledge your badge of honour that everyone else would want to wear.
