What are Carbon Conversations?
The Carbon Conversations is an inspiring, practical 6-session course on low-carbon living. It was recently featured in the Guardian as one of the 20 best solutions to climate change.
The course:
- is based on the psychology of change
- is emotionally engaging
- is technically rigorous
- has an up to date, attractive handbook, games and materials
Led by trained volunteer facilitators, groups of 6-8 members meet in homes, community centres, workplaces or other venues. The six 2-hour meetings help the members to overcome the barriers often associated with making large carbon reductions.
Members explore the basic climate change problem, their responses to it, their ideas for a low-carbon future and the four key areas of the footprint:
- home energy
- travel
- food
- other consumption
Most members make reductions of 1 tonne CO2 during the course and develop plans to halve their footprints over a longer period.
Carbon Conversations was developed by ‘Cambridge Carbon Footprint‘. The methodology has been developed by a combination of psychological, technical and professional input. The scheme has seen ever growing success over the last 3 years in England, gradually cascading across the country and – now – up to Scotland. Throughout this expansion the developers have taken great care to ensure quality and standards are maintained. Cambridge Carbon Footprint offer an official accreditation for both those taking the course and for those facilitating it.

Facilitator training weekend – August 21st / 22nd, 5 Forrest Hill, UofE
Join us for a weekend with the developers of Carbon Conversations, where they will be training 6 new pairs of facilitators to lead groups across the University in the Autumn semester. Guided by Rosemary Randall and Andy Brown of Cambridge Carbon Footprint we will work through the personal, emotional and technical challenges posed by climate change, and learn how to facilitate groups that successfully overcome these to live lower-carbon lifestyles. The weekend will provide you with advanced group facilitation skills, technical awareness and the accreditation to run a Carbon Conversation group both here in the University and further afield.
