Food

Click here to see what we’re all up to these summery days….

We love food. We love eating it, cooking with it, growing it, playing with it and talking about it… It’s our fuel where would we be without our faithful bowl of porridge in the morning or handy pasta pesto dish?

Yet, according to our rather fantastic ‘Footprints & Handprints’ report the food we consume here at the university makes up around 15% of our community carbon footprint today.

On top of this soul destroying facts and figures exist that show that our eating habits have got just a little bit out of hand:

‘1 in 3 meals eaten in Britain is a ready meal’

‘1/3rd of the world’s crop feed animals not people’

‘The average age of a British farmer today is 59’

Does this sound like a sustainable food system?            NO!

Do you want to see a sustainable food system?          YES!

HOW?

Here at TEU food ideas are a-buzzing to turn our university into a creative and sustainable food hub.

Here’s what we want to do:

CONNECT- We want to put people, groups and societies in touch with existing people, groups and societies that are paving the way in sustainable food on campus and beyond.

SPREAD THE WORD- Raise awareness through an exciting, creative and striking low-carbon food campaign. We want to target the carbon heavy parts of our diet, that’s meat and dairy folks, through a meat friendly ‘cut down, not out’ approach. We like the ‘part-time carnivore’ campaign (http://www.parttimecarnivore.org/). We hope to run a regular day that will bring all of our food aspirations together.

RE-SKILL- On these days we want to run interactive food related workshops. From foraging to preserving, beer brewing to permaculture, composting to cooking.

Food matters, without it what would we, could we, achieve. Sweet nothing, and it wouldn’t be very sweet.

What do you reckon?
