Thursday 19th August:
The Great Escape!!
Bicycle ride & picnic….
Thursday 19th August 10am-2pm Start/end Main Library, George Sq.

Time to get a short break from all the Fringe bustle!
Edinburgh in August becomes a bit crowded. What better oppotunity that to get to know some alternative paths around the city and avoid the dense mass of festival-goers.
Transition Edinburgh University is putting on The Great Escape: a 4 hour getaway from the Festival commotion in the form of a laid back cruise to discover alternative paths around the city. There are in fact multiple pay-offs. Aside from expanding your Edinburgh cycle path knowledge and escaping the busy mid-August Festival madness – while getting some exercise and meeting new people – there’s a fantastic community garden waiting at other end, perfect for a hearty picnic lunch.
Join us for the Bike Tour and picnic on Thursday 19th August, from 10am-2pm. Meeting point at the Main Library in George Square.
You don’t need to be a very experienced cyclist. We’ll mainly be off-road on smooth paths. All you need is a bike (good footwear, waterproofs, water) and some energy
The Great Escape is open to all staff and students.
Please RSVP to ben@teu.org.uk

Friday 28th May
“What Is Permaculture?”
Friday 28th May from 2pm til 4pm in Teviot Dining Room
Caroline Kemp from Permaculture Edinburgh will be speaking with an additional talk from Edinburgh Allotment and Permaculture on their current projects and how to get involved.
“The word ‘permaculture’ comes from ‘permanent agriculture‘ and ‘permanent culture‘ – it is about living lightly on the planet, and making sure that we can sustain human activities for many generations to come, in harmony with nature. Permanence is not about everything staying the same. Its about stability, about deepening soils and cleaner water, thriving communities in self-reliant regions, biodiverse agriculture and social justice, peace and abundance.” (Permaculture Association Website)
See here for location of the venue, and click on ‘Teviot Row House’ underneath the map.

Thursday 13th May:
Bring your lunch and come chat about… you guessed it, FOOD!
Thursday 13th May/George Square (the chaplaincy if wet)/1pm
A bunch of us are having lunch in George Square next Thursday to start hammering out a wonderful programme of workshops and taste-tastic events for the coming year. If you could have your pick of food related skills workshops, what would they be? Pickling? Bread-baking? Seed-propogation? And how might we raise awareness of the issues surrounding food whilst getting stuck into the fun stuff?
If its sunny we’ll be in George Square, if its rainy or cold we’ll be in the Chaplaincy (ground floor in the auditorium). Either way we’ll have a little sign saying ‘Food lovers unite!’ or something so if you can identify us from 50 paces.
Bring your lunch or more to share if you’ve got it!
See our food page for where our thinkings got to so far…

Thursday 29th April:

FOOD of the FUTURE
In a changing climate and with cheap oil running out, why are our diet choices important? Last Thursday in the Curle Room, Kings Buildings House, a room full of people got to grips with the impacts our food habits have on the future of food and more importantly what we can do to about it!
Food, as with any consumption, contributes to our carbon emissions. The way it is produced, packaged, transported, and even cooked, all make a difference, and, given that most of us eat three times a day, it’s worth thinking about what we can do about it. So we asked our speakers: What does sustainable food taste like? What should we be eating? Where should we be getting it from?
Transition Edinburgh University’s Ric Lander was first up relating how food fits into the university’s carbon footprint, (making up no less than a whopping 15%). Peter Smith (Msc Carbon Management) linked carbon emissions to the cycle of food from field to landfill. Rob Kyle (Abundance Edinburgh) motivated us to get involved in edible projects going on right here, right now in Edinburgh (see links below) and Donald Reid (Slow food Edinburgh) spoke to us about the wonders of slow, real food and sourcing local food through the prospective Forth Diet Project.
A huge thank you to all the speakers and all who came, it was a truly inspiring event.
It’s an exciting time to get involved in food. Here at TEU many plans and ideas are afoot for a programme of workshops and educational events, but we want more… we want to hear from you! If you are interested in getting involved with TEU food in any way, shape or form email Abby at abby@teu.org.uk.
