Summer Travel Fair
Come along to our Travel Fair on May 14th in George Square Lecture Theatre for ideas, inspiration and information for the summer you will never forget!
We’ll have the experts at LoCo2 Travel who can give personalised advice on national and international travel, with ‘gentle to mental’ ideas for trips and activities.
We’ll have stalls about Scottish youth hostels and Green Tourist accommodation ideas. How to get there, where to go – everything you need to know!
We’ll have free bike fixing so you can get your bike ready for summer trips out.
We’ll have a ‘chill out’ area with tea, coffee and bisquits where you can escape from offices and libraries, browse maps and information while also chatting with other travellers. Share you ideas and experiences and maybe you will come up with something neither of you has ever imagined doing before!
Come along from 10am-4pm and get excited about your summer!

We’ll be inviting you to become a part of a growing community of infrequent flyers. We’ll help you explore alternative travel, invite you to great events and even send you a personalised pocket guide.
We’ll also be running a travel writing and photography competition with fantastic prizes for your stories, memories and recommendations for low-impact travel. Watch this space for an announcement soon.
Where are we heading?
Most students and staff already have a low-carbon trip into University and back each day, whether walking, cycling, taking the bus or sharing a lift. The University already runs some excellent schemes to encourage more people to take these options.
You can find out more about these here: University of Edinburgh Transport Schemes
This means that the biggest chunk of our community’s carbon footprint results from our choices on leisure travel for holidays and visiting family and friends. We know that pollution is changing our climate and that cheap oil is running out, so how can we make our university fit for the future?
We aim to promote low-impact but high-excitement leisure travel. We hope to create a buzz about holidays in Scotland and further afield and to create a one-stop-shop on this website for information about destinations that are easily and cheaply accessible for students and staff.
Other ideas that we are working on include:
- Collecting and mapping travel stories, writing, photos and videos from people’s experiences. We will run competitions for the best contributions.
- Exploring new ways of providing bulk transport for students coming to University at the start of Freshers’ Week.
Please get in touch if you want to contribute to the start of the great Travel Transition!
Get Involved in Transition Edinburgh University
Whether walking or cycling, taking the bus or sharing a lift, most students and staff have a low-carbon trip into University and back each day. If not, there are some fantastic initiatives that the University has to encourage more people to take these options. Therefore, the biggest wedge of our community’s carbon footprint results from our choices on leisure travel for holidays and visiting family and friends.
The Transition travel project aims to promote low-impact but high-excitement leisure travel. The project aims to create a positive buzz about local travel opportunities in Scotland and the rest of the UK by providing a one-stop-shop on this website for information about projects and destinations that are easily and cheaply accessible for students and staff.
Other ideas at this early stage in the project are:
- To collect and map travel stories, writing, photos and videos from people’s experiences. We plan to run competitions for the best contributions.
- To organise a massive Summer Travel Fair, inviting organisations and companies to promote their destinations, projects, tours and travel deals.
- To explore new ways of providing bulk transport for students coming to University at the start of Freshers’ Week.
Please get in touch if you want to contribute to the start of the great Travel Transition!
