Clear skies for a little while

One of the most interesting things about our recent volcano trouble is what it did to the sky. It’s not so noticeable in Edinburgh, but where I grew up in the South East of England aeroplane vapour trails are a regular sight. The familiar sound of take-off and landing becomes a regular part of your background. During the first big flight ban my southern friends kept telling me: “It’s weird now the planes are gone.” The skies felt empty.
